In 1952, on the island of Koshima, in Japan, scientists observed monkeys washing sweet potatoes and gradually this new behavior sweeped to the younger generation of monkeys. Once critical mass was reached, the “hundredth monkey” this learned behavior spread across the water to monkeys on nearby islands, according to research on Wikipedia.
Interestingly, they are calling it a phenomenon, in which learned behavior spreads instantaneously, escalating of an idea or ability to the remainder of a population, once a certain portion of that population has heard of the new idea or learned ability. This story originated with Lawrence Blair and Lyall Watson in the late 70s according to Wikipedia.
Ken Keyes wrote a book, the Hundredth Monkey, about the effects of nuclear war on the planet. Keyes penned a parable on the hundredth money effect applying it to human society and positive change. I found this fascinating to the degree that Egypt began the “hundredth monkey” movement and Occupy Wall Street has caught it!!! I listen to a video this morning of a young reporter, Luke Rudkowski, being interviewed at the movement on Wall Street. I was so moved by his passion and dedication for change! I wrote in one of my blogs that I wanted to chat with someone from this movement as most young people that I know do not have this passion or commitment. This was the next best thing!
Yes, change is in the air and many before me have said it’s a great time to be alive as this will be something that will go down as the most pivotal time in the history of the world.
Stay tuned in…
